Computer Networks

A full university course in computer networking, built from the wire upward. You will learn the OSI and TCP/IP layers, Ethernet frames and switching, IP addressing and subnetting arithmetic done by hand, routing decisions, NAT, TCP and UDP, DNS, DHCP, IPv6, TLS, firewalls, and VPNs. It closes by reading a real packet capture field by field and diagnosing a broken network in order.

What you'll learn

  • ✓Name every OSI layer, say what it adds to a packet, and map it onto the four-layer TCP/IP stack
  • ✓Read an Ethernet frame and an IP header field by field, and explain how ARP links the two
  • ✓Subnet a /16 into usable /24s in binary and say exactly which host addresses are legal
  • ✓Read a routing table line by line and predict which route a given destination takes
  • ✓Trace a TCP connection from handshake to TIME_WAIT, and explain when UDP is the better answer
  • ✓Diagnose a broken connection in order: link, address, route, name, port, application
